Office of Dr. Luke Mayes, Chiropractor and Registered Nurse in Boise ID
May 1, 2017
To My Valued Patients:
It is with mixed and heavy emotions that I share with you the following news.
After 16 years of providing chiropractic care to the Treasure Valley I will be closing my doors May 31, 2017. I have struggled to stay in business and keep my doors open for numerous months and at many times in the past decade. I have always felt it important to be willing to help anyone that needed my skills and services regardless of their ability to pay. However, I no longer have the patient numbers to sustain a viable business and continue to help those in need.
Insurance has changed significantly over the last 16 years. Most of our patients have insurance with large deductibles of $3,000 or more. In order for insurance to pay a portion of the cost of chiropractic care, the patient must first cover this deductible. As a result, patients have increased costs out of their own pocket and are unable to cover these costs and survive day to day. The Chiropractic costs that are covered by insurance is minimal at best, and does not cover the physical costs of rent, staff salaries, equipment leases and supplies. Because of the increase in out of pocket costs, several patients no longer receive the recommended amount of care. Instead, patients save money, and suffer with back or neck pain just to be able to survive day to day. Many companies cut their costs by offering their employees insurance with high deductibles. Our world is changing and it is not only affecting my patients but everyone around us. Unfortunately, this has also affected my ability to pay my staff and to cover our overhead costs. Therefore, I have come to the decision that it is time to close the doors of Mayes Chiropractic.
I have been working two jobs for the last 4 years. Currently, I am an ICU nurse at St. Luke’s downtown and a part time Chiropractor. The physical stress and lack of sleep have taken a substantial toll on me personally, both emotionally and physically. In the last 6 months alone I have completed 12 credits of full time study to complete my BSN, I have gotten married to an incredibly caring and amazing man, I have maintained two jobs with little sleep, and my children have not spent the quality of time they should get from a tired and exhausted dad. It has taken a significant number of people to point out the amount of stress that I carry each day. My health and my family are finally going to take the priority that they deserve.
I have met some amazing and fabulous people in my career as a Chiropractor. I appreciate each of you so very much. I was reminded recently that there are not a lot of doctors who form such close friendships with their patients. Many of you were at my wedding in November; I can’t thank you enough for being part of our family celebration. I wish each of you the best. Thank you again for touching my life in such an amazing way, I feel very blessed and privileged.
With Warmest Regards,
Dr. Luke Mayes
